September 24, 2018 - Ask and Ye Shall Receive

We had Zone conference this past Tuesday and it was awesome, the spirit there was so strong. Since we are so far away, we always have to wake up early to get there on time. The drive up the canyon is absolutely beautiful, I love Oregon. We learned about setting goals and making plans. Elder Ballard says those who accomplish the most in this world are those with a vision for their lives, with goals to keep them focused on their vision and tactical plans for how to achieve them. Setting goals and making plans is a lifetime principle that can help out every single one of us. Even God made plans and goals.

On Wednesday we were on exchanges. I was with Elder King in the Dairy Creek Ward, he is a great missionary. I learned a ton from him on that exchange. We were able to do lots of finding and talking to many many people. I've been blessed to serve here in Tillamook for so long, the people on exchanges were kind of rude.

One day we got a call from a member saying that an excommunicated member needed some help, he was in the ER. We went and visited with him for a little while and he told us how blessed we were to be apart of this church. He knew that even though the people in the church are not perfect, that the church itself is perfect. It is amazing how strong of a testimony he had of the church even though he was not a member anymore.

A while back our Mission President asked us to go running every morning. We have been doing this and I've noticed that it has gotten much easier to run. He even wants us to go and run during the winter when it is raining, that will be a lot of fun. Not.

One of my favorite scriptures I read this last week is in the book of 3rd Nephi Chapter 27 verse 29 it says "therefore, ask, and you shall receive; knock, and it shall be opened unto you; for he that asketh, receiveth; and unto him that knocketh, it shall be opened". I think that sometimes as humans we are too stubborn to ask God for help. In one of President Nelson's talks from this last General Conference, he talks about how God is so willing to reveal the secrets of the universe to us if we only ask. This truly shows God's love for everyone of us because he is willing to reveal these things to us. He will always direct us from good and not lead us astray. As we continue to build a relationship with him, we will better understand how he speaks to us and grow into a principle of Revelation as we do so. -Elder Robbins

September 17, 2018 - Guidance for all!

This past week we have been so busy, it crazy to think it's Monday already. We witnessed many miracles with some of the people we are working with, These came as we listened to the guidance of the spirit and acted on those promptings. I find that many times when the spirit tells me to do something I don’t understand why but as I follow all those promptings then much good comes from it.

We teach this man named Terry every Saturday night. Missionaries have been working with him for years also. When I first got to Tillamook we would go in with a plan and stick to that plan and because of that we didn't get anything done. As we have prayerfully sought out what his concerns are, we have been able to resolve them and know exactly what he needs to hear in that moment. This past Saturday, we were talking about the Book of Mormon.
He really didn't understand what the purpose of it was or why it was needed, he just saw it as a history book. We told him how it is the convincing evidence that Joseph Smith was called as a prophet because God knew people would doubt him and all of the visions he saw. It also is a second witness to the Bible and many of its teaching, it also expands on the Bible so we know more about God's will for us and more about Christ's gospel. We used Alma Chapter 40 to expand on his knowledge. The Bible doesn't talk much about what happens between death and the resurrection so we taught him what happens by reading in Alma 40. He was absolutely amazed by this. If we had not been willing to listen to the spirit and break away from our plans, then this would not have happened and we still would have been stuck on things that aren't the main concern.

We are working with this lady named Jessica. We found her about 2 weeks back and weren't sure what was going to happen with her because many people don't like to open their door and she seemed skeptical. We had to knock a few times to get her to answer. When she finally did, the spirit was so strong in our conversation. We taught her all about the restoration and how it can bless her life and her family's life. She shared some amazing experiences with us that she has had and if we hadn't listened to the spirit to knock a few more times that wouldn't have happened.

We saw many other miracles throughout our week as we relied on God to direct everything we did. Preparation and practice is important when trying to feel God's presence. We study a lot as missionaries so that we can be prepared in any situation. Through the scriptures we can strengthen our relationship with Christ and feel his presence in our life more. One of my favorite scriptures from this past week talks about this is in Helaman 3:29 "Yea, we see that whosoever will may lay hold upon the word of God, which is quick and powerful, which shall divide asunder all the cunning and the snares and the wiles of the devil, and lead the man of Christ in a strait and narrow course across that everlasting gulf of misery which is prepared to engulf the wicked— 30 And land their souls, yea, their immortal souls, at the right hand of God in the kingdom of heaven... to go no more out."

As we feast upon the words of Christ and apply them to our lives, he will direct us for good so that one day we can live with God again.

September 10, 2018 - Building a Fortress

This past week I was reading the war chapters in the book of Alma. Now these chapters are kind of boring to me and so I just flew through them trying to get past them and onto something better. As I looked back on them, I noticed something interesting.

The Lamanites - all that they wanted was to take over the Nephite cities. All that the Nephites wanted was to keep their cities and their possessions. Let’s say that the Lamanites are Satan and we are the Nephite cities. It talks about how the Nephites strengthened their cites by making large mounds of dirt all around the city so that they could cast stones and arrows down at the Lamanites. Then they would build large walls of wood at the top of the mound of dirt for more protection from the Lamanites. When the Nephites were in their cities, the Lamanites couldn't overthrow them they were just too strong. But on occasion, there would be contention within the city and because of that the Lamanites would take over and kick out the Nephites. The Nephites then knowing how strong the city was, knew they could not overtake it unless they used strategy. So that is what they did, they planned how to draw out the Lamanites and through God’s help, they were able to do it and take over the city again.

If we relate this to ourselves, we must build mounds of dirt and walls to be prepared and fight against Satan. The scriptures and modern day prophets council us on how to do this. It’s not always simple but if we read the scriptures and pray daily, and go to church weekly then our walls will always get stronger and stronger. But sometimes there is contention within ourselves, we sin, we mess up and Satan takes some of our city. So by strategy and through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we can take back over, we can change from our sins and continually improve.

When we obey the commandments of God, he is willing to bless us with anything we may be in need of if it is in his time table. We have been super busy this past week and had a lot of success! I have really come to appreciate the guidance of the Holy Spirit because without it I don't know what I would do in so many situations. God is good. Sorry I don't really have any pictures from this week. Hopefully I will next week.

September 3, 2018 - Power of Prayer

This past week has been filled with many miracles even though it was slower.

One of the big miracles is that Richard came to church for the first time in a long while. It seemed that all three hours were focused straight to him. It was pretty awesome. LaTasha also got up and bore her testimony! It is amazing how much faith she has and how much she wants to learn and grow.

For me church seemed to be all about prayer which was a miracle because that is what I have been studying a lot about this past week. My favorite scripture that I came across was in Alma 37:36-37. In these few verses Alma is giving his son guidance and I think if we were all to take this to heart that we would have a much better life also.
It says "Yea, and cry unto God for all thy support; yea, let all thy doings be unto the Lord, and whithersoever thou goest let it be in the Lord; yea, let all thy thoughts be directed unto the Lord; yea, let the affections of thy heart be placed upon the Lord forever. Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God;" My favorite part is counsel with the Lord in all you do and he will direct thee for good. This last week I put this to the test and let me tell you he definitely directed me for good when I truly humbled myself and turned to him. God loves every one of us and wants to bless us more than we could ever know.

I love being a missionary and my life has been changed forever because of the man it has made me.
